La Douleur: Wabyanko’s Sculptural Dialogue with Pain and History

In my art series La Douleur, I explore the universal and timeless theme of pain (douleur in French) through a powerful fusion of sculptural inspiration and historical reference. This collection channels both the emotional intensity of human suffering and the enduring legacy of art history.

Each work — from La Douleur Tréguier to Sad girl Bataclan, Pain of Statue Liberty, and Ernest Renan — embodies a distinct facet of pain, whether personal, collective, or symbolic. Inspired by classical sculpture and poignant historical moments, these pieces speak to resilience amid hardship, the scars left by trauma, and the strength found in remembrance.

La Douleur Tréguier draws on the spiritual sorrow rooted in the Breton town’s heritage, reflecting quiet, contemplative pain.

Sad girl Bataclan confronts the raw wounds of collective trauma, evoking the strength and fragility of those affected by tragedy. Inspired by artwork sad girl street art by Banksy

Pain of Statue Liberty challenges the ideal of freedom, unveiling the hidden suffering beneath symbols of hope and liberty.

Ernest Renan pays homage to the philosopher’s contemplation of human existence, belief, and doubt — a nuanced reflection on inner conflict.

Through texture, form, and historical dialogue, La Douleur bridges the past and present, inviting viewers to engage with pain not just as suffering but as a powerful force shaping identity, memory, and resilience.
